In Fear – A Commentary & Slight Review
In Fear is a little film based in Ireland where a young couple make a pit stop at a hotel on their way to a music festival….or do they? They get lost on their way to the hotel and, of course, bad times ensue. I didn’t really know what to expect from this movie based on the title and the small write-up Netflix provided, so I was very pleasantly surprised when this movie (like so many “foreign” films) decided to “go there”. I’ve said this in a previous post somewhere, but I love that foreign movies (read: anything made outside of the US) will go places that North American films won’t go. Let me just say that I did not see that ending coming (someone dies and it’s DEVASTATING). Now because this movie is about a couple getting lost, I thought it would be fun to do a slight commentary on why the whole situation in this movie would never happen to me. I might get a bit spoiler-ish, but read on if you want to find out a bit more about me.
So, why would In Fear never happen to me? Well, let’s look first at what happens in the movie. A couple gets lost on the road while driving and eventually gets terrorized by a lone madman. Now of course getting lost would totally happen to me because I have literally gotten lost in my own city trying to just get home (yeah, do not let me navigate you through anything remotely geographical because we will end up in Narnia). But while I was lost, there is no way in the world that I would be terrorized by someone. If anything, they would be running for their life. When I watched In Fear, all I could think was, “This dude would totally be watching me from afar and trying to scare me but would only hear me screaming swear word after swear word in my car at the top of my lungs.” What I’m saying is that in a scenario where someone is trying to mess with my head by getting me lost, they’d immediately re-think their own insanity after seeing my reaction to being off course.
Now to my thoughts on the movie itself. I looked up some reviews on In Fear online before writing this (a.k.a. I Googled the title to make sure it was the right movie, then saw the ratings in the search results) and they were pretty mixed. But none of the reviews I saw seemed to be good; they were either average or below average. I know I have a different concept in humour, but now horror too? I thought that this was a pretty fresh story and the final scenes were well written and very well acted. The whole concept of being lost somewhere that isn’t familiar to you added to the tension in the film, and having the couple be a “new” item (i.e. they’d only been seeing each other for a couple of weeks) made their reactions all the more plausible and logical. I watched this movie twice in two days – what more do I really need to say beyond that? 😛
So as I do in all of my posts, I want to know (if you watch the movie) how you feel about it? Didn’t you think that ending was mind blowing and heart breaking? Also, please tell me I’m not the only one who lays a dang egg when they get lost. It’s super frustrating, right?
